Mt St Helen’s National Volcanic Monument is just an hour away from Mossyrock, Washington and makes for an ideal day trip. Its May 1980 eruption was the deadliest and most economically devastating volcanic event in the US. The eruption killed 57 people and reduced the elevation of the mountain by over 1000 feet. Mt St Helens is still an active volcano and experiences activity to this day. However, it is perfectly safe to visit the park, as it closes when activity is detected. Mt St Helens is a great place to observe both the destruction of nature and the ability of it to recover. At the visitors center, you can view a movie about the history of Mt St Helens, the eruption, and the aftermath. |
